Building Better Futures for Students
For Maggie Campbell ’20 Richwine, a graduate with a degree in Communication and a minor in Business, the journey to her current role as Director of Strategic Initiatives at Building Our Future has been one of passion for system-wide change in education.
Campbell always knew she wanted to work in education, though her path shifted over the years. Initially an elementary education major at Asbury, she soon realized the classroom wasn’t the right fit. Instead, she found herself drawn to education’s impact, leading her to work in higher education for three years before transitioning to nonprofit work in Wisconsin.
“When the opportunity at Building Our Future arose, it felt like the perfect way to combine my passion for system-change work with my commitment to impacting people through education,” Campbell shared.
Campbell finds deep joy in connecting with her local community, celebrating its strengths and working collaboratively to improve education systems. However, she has also learned that working within large, established systems often requires patience and compromise.
“Nothing is black and white — there’s always red tape to navigate,” she said. “People often have the best intentions, but obstacles arise, and we have to extend grace while finding ways to move forward.”
Campbell credits Asbury’s dedicated faculty and staff for shaping her perspective on selflessness and service. “I didn’t fully realize until I had a full-time job just how much time they sacrificed for students,” she said. “Now, I try to live my life with that same dedication. If something matters to you, you’ll make time for it.”
For current students and young alums, Campbell offers this advice:“Surround yourself with a strong community of believers. The transition from Asbury to adulthood can be challenging, but having a support system through church, friendships, and shared hobbies makes all the difference.”
Campbell lives in Kenosha, Wisconsin, with her husband, whom she met while serving in Asbury’s Student Government. She enjoys traveling, reading, listening to podcasts, and embracing the beauty of Wisconsin summers.
