From Malaysia to Ministry, Sharing Stories for God’s Glory
Nathanael Chong’s journey from Malaysia to Birmingham, Alabama, has been marked by unexpected turns and divine guidance. The 2020 Asbury Media Communication graduate now serves as the Media and Communications Director at Christ Church Birmingham, a Global Methodist church.
“I came to Asbury as an international student, eager to start a new life,” Chong shared. “Since then, God has led me across the country, through fascinating landscapes and into incredible communities, until He placed me where I am today.”
In his role, Chong leverages his media expertise to share stories of God’s mission and inspire others to say yes to Jesus.
“Professionally, I’ve learned the importance of storytelling,” he said. “We tell stories of God’s work to invite people to be part of His mission. Personally, I’ve learned to be expectant for what God has in store—He’s always doing something new to transform lives.”
Chong credits Asbury with equipping him for his vocation, both technically and spiritually. His classes prepared him to produce media and craft compelling narratives while fostering a Christ-centered ethos of service.
“One of my favorite classes was Foundations of Christian Thought with Dr. Chris Bounds,” Chong recalled. “His approach to systematic theology helped me relate to God in new ways and appreciate the richness of the Christian tradition.”
His advice to students and young alumni is to invest in relationships with professors.
“Make every effort to build connections beyond classwork,” he said. “They can provide wisdom, advice, and relationships that will be invaluable in your professional life.”
When not working, Chong enjoys writing newsletters, composing music, and savoring lavender-vanilla lattes at his favorite coffee shop.
