Who Are We Becoming?

This year, Chapel is focused on “Becoming: You are what you love.” As a campus, we have been challenged by speakers to allow the Lord to create a new heart in us. To give us eyes to see that what we love, we become. At Asbury, we seek to create the conditions for students to belong, become and be set apart. Becoming is not something we opt in or out of at our choosing. We are always becoming. The question lies in what we are becoming? Who are we becoming — as people and as a community?

Asbury University is one of the most deliberate environments I have ever been in. Great thought and effort go into a cultivating a student’s communal experience, refining their mind through rigorous education, preparing them to serve and add value in today’s professional world, and orienting their hearts to, “seek the things that are above, where Christ is…” (Col. 3:1).

Asbury is not just a university experience; it is a story of becoming. I explored this topic more deeply with two students. Madison Anderson is a senior journalism major, and Jena Pelletier is a senior sociology major. I hope you will take the time to listen to our brief conversation and enjoy learning more about what we are pursuing as a community at Asbury as we head into 2023.

A Family On Mission: The Engelhardts

Asbury University strives to be a community that answers the biblical call of helping others in need. Jesus charges us with caring for the widows and orphans among us, and through foster care and adoption by members of the Asbury family, many children have the opportunity to experience the hope and love of Christ.

For Social Work Professor Ethan Engelhardt ’13, his personal life gives him practical experience to draw from as he teaches students how to be faith-filled facilitators of the foster and adoption process. Ethan and his wife, Jordan Cuckler ’13 Engelhardt, shared their family’s journey of fostering and adopting.

“We always knew that fostering and adopting was something we wanted to be a part of” said Jordan. “It’s something to handle with care and with grace. I’m really thankful I have the privilege of showing people what it’s like to welcome kids into our home, letting them know that it’s worth it, even though it can be hard.”
