Asbury Summer Camps Offer Opportunities to High School Students

With more than 300 students in attendance this year, summer camps at Asbury University offered opportunities for high school students to gain knowledge, grow in Christ, and form friendships all while enjoying a college-like atmosphere.
“By getting a small taste of what Asbury has to offer during ImpactU, students attend college classes with great professors and professionals working in various industries,” Fouts said. “For example, the 2023 Teacher of the Year Mandy Perez spoke with students during the education camp.”
ImpactU camps included opportunities in acting, film, forensic science, equine, sales and marketing, education, coding, and environmental science and biotechnology. Tanner Fouts served as the ImpactU camp director.
In addition to learning more about their fields of interest, students built community and attended Chapel services.
“I saw campers arrive with the expectation to learn more about sales and marketing and leave with their first Bible, hungry to know God more,” Fouts continued. “That is a lasting impact of which I am proud to be a part.”
To continue Asbury’s legacy of spiritual vitality, Asbury University’s SummitCamp provided a unique camp experience with a focus on educating and conversing about worldviews and today’s pressing topics. Summit Ministries based in Manitou Springs, Colo., administered the camp. Lydia Massengale ’19 served as Asbury’s SummitCamp director.
“With a mix of seminars, small groups, and camp activities, campers grew in their knowledge and understanding of their beliefs, while gaining language to share it,” Massengale said. “The bonding of the campers seemed to be expedited by the vulnerability that the seminar content brought, and I loved seeing the fruit of those friendships as they played hard and prayed hard with one another.”
High school students who completed SummitCamp experience before their senior year of high school qualify for the Asbury University Summit Ministries Scholarship (available for new, incoming, traditional undergraduate students). Youth Becoming Leaders (YBL) offered opportunities for high school students to become leaders in their communities through completing ministry projects. Students received immersion in a Christian community, theological instruction from renowned Asbury University and Asbury Theological Seminary faculty, and experiential training in spiritual disciplines. Dr. Brian Hull served as the director for YBL.
“I am truly inspired by the talent, passion, and dedication exhibited by the participants of this year’s Youth Becoming Leaders,” said Hull. “These young men and women are great leaders, and we are confident that they will go on to shape a brighter future for our church and world. These young people are hungry to walk in the way of Jesus, and we are excited to see where God leads them!”
High school students who completed the YBL program prior to the start of their first year at Asbury are eligible for the Youth Becoming Leaders Scholarship (available for new, incoming, traditional undergraduate students).
