Asbury’s Media, Journalism & Digital Storytelling Department received 13 Student Production Award nominations from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Ohio Valley Chapter — the most nominations Asbury has ever received. The students competed against other university students in Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, and Ohio. In past years, Asbury has won 38 of the awards.
“The Student Production Awards from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences are one of the most impressive television awards a student can obtain,” said Dean of the School of Communication Arts Dr. Jim Owens ’79. “Having the nominations or awards on the students’ résumés is highly credible to prospective employers. Having this type of external validation of the hard work from talented students and faculty committed to excellence is very encouraging.”
The accomplishments include student nominations in directing, photography, writing, special effects and graphics, and editing, with other nominations focused on different forms of fiction and nonfiction, as well as video essay production.
Many award nominations include submissions from the Highbridge Film Festival, an annual event that showcases Asbury’s media communications projects which are entirely student-made.
“Seeing our projects compete well against others outside of Asbury, and even seeing wins at local festivals has been very encouraging,” said Ian Wang ’24, who received awards from Louisville Short Film Slam, Top Shorts, and Best Shorts Competition for his Highbridge films “Buddy” and “Piece for Piece.” “I never create films to receive accolades but knowing that our efforts and talents can be appreciated and rewarded in the real-world industry gives me confidence to keep creating.”
The recipients for the College Student Production Awards competition will be announced during a ceremony on Sunday, August 18, at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. at www.ohiovalleyemmy.org and through The Emmys app.
