Asbury University Updates Campus Through Facility and Safety Improvement Initiatives

August 14, 2024

As the fall 2024 semester approaches, Asbury University is excited to announce several new initiatives and projects aimed at furthering its commitment to student formation. This summer brought significant investments in facilities, student services, and ongoing safety initiatives, marking the fourth year of a multi-year safety improvement plan.

“As a student-centric university, Asbury has always prioritized the safety, welfare, and well-being of our students. And we want our facilities and resident life spaces to reflect those values,” said Asbury President, Dr. Kevin Brown. “Evaluating campus needs to align with student welfare is a constant and continuing conversation. And as we enter this new year, I am excited about new investments and campus additions to reinforce campus community and well-being for our students, faculty and staff.”

When students return to campus in just a few short weeks, they will benefit from campus facility updates including:

  • Fresh paint in the residence halls.
  • A new roof, renovated rooftop patio, and new lighting and HVAC in common areas in Kresge residence hall.
  • A newly renovated lobby in Glide-Crawford residence hall.
  • Updates in the newly renovated Student Center with paint, art, and other upgrades.
  • A new food service provider, Fresh Ideas, along with updates to the Dining Hall and ZT’s Bistro with plans for extensive renovations to these spaces in the future. The upgraded dining program introduces new culinary trends and engaging dining programs for students.
  • Construction on the second and final phase of Asbury’s Outdoor Venue project is in process. The Outdoor Venue is a multi-use facility designed to enrich campus life, impact the student formational experience, host TeamAU athletics events, and grow athletics as a platform to glorify God.
  • Student-athletes will also enjoy newly built and renovated locker rooms in the Luce Physical Activities Center as well as a newly resurfaced basketball floor.
  • Opening of new student housing.
  • Updated parking lots near Kresge and Miller.

In addition to Asbury’s new facilities, the Department of Campus Safety continues to implement measures to maintain safety and security at Asbury through a multi-year plan that began in 2021.

  • 24/7 Safety Officers: The campus is patrolled around the clock by safety officers to facilitate a secure environment.
  • School Resource Officer: A dedicated officer from the local Sheriff’s Office is part of the staff, contributing to campus safety.
  • Campus Shield App: This app allows for confidential incident reporting, increased communication with Campus Safety, and contains emergency response resources.
  • Campus Shuttle Service: A free shuttle service is available for students every evening of the semester.
  • Emergency Texting: A campus-wide emergency alert system is in place to send notifications via email and text.
  • Central Safety Office: The Campus Safety office is conveniently located in the Student Center for easy access for students.
  • Regular Drills: Emergency preparedness drills are conducted regularly to enhance readiness.
  • Title IX Coordinators: Designated coordinators investigate and respond to reports of sexual misconduct and provide support services. These Coordinators are available to all students.
  • Mental Health Support: Mental health counselors are available on campus at no cost to students.
  • Clery Act and State Law Compliance: Asbury fully complies will all mandatory reporting and disclosure requirements.
  • Surveillance System Upgrades: Over the summer, lighting and camera platform systems were upgraded, and additional cameras were installed in various campus areas, including multiple residence halls.
  • The Equine Center: A new gate is set to be installed with lighting and fencing at the facility’s entrance.

These measures are part of Asbury University’s ongoing commitment to campus safety, to facilitate a secure and supportive environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
