All full-time (12+ credit hours/semester) TUG students are required to complete 32 Faith, Learning & Experience (FLEX) credits each semester. Of the 32 credits, 26 are required to be earned in Hughes Chapel at 10 a.m. M/W/F. The remaining 6 may be earned through other FLEX opportunities if desired.
Students with fewer than 12 credit hours but more than 6 credit hours at the end of drop/add are required to complete 16 FLEX credits. At least 13 credits must be from Hughes Chapel 10 a.m. M/W/F. A maximum of 3 credits may be earned through other FLEX opportunities.
Students with 6 or fewer credit hours at the end of drop/add are encouraged to attend any FLEX events but are not required to complete FLEX credits. These students will be not be assigned a chapel seat but are welcome to sit in the guest section.
Attendance is managed through the iAttended App. Students who have a FLEX credit requirement should download and install the app from the iOS App Store or Google Play for Android and register using their Asbury email address. Additionally, students may access the app on their computers at iAttendedApp.com. Students who do not have a smartphone must notify ChapelAttendance@asbury.edu so their attendance can be tracked manually.
Students who have unavoidable commitments that conflict with M/W/F 10 a.m. Hughes Chapel more than 5 times may complete a Special Consideration Request for FLEX credit adjustment. Due to the flexibility already built into the FLEX credit requirement, credit adjustments are typically prorated at 50% rather than 1-for-1 unless the student qualifies for exemption from Chapel.
Examples of unavoidable commitments are:
Students who are approved for alternate instruction by Health Services and the Registrar’s Office will complete FLEX credits by viewing Hughes Chapel services online and completing a paragraph (minimum three sentences) summary of the Chapel. The response should demonstrate that the student listened to the entire Chapel message. Summaries are due 14 days after the return to campus date. Please contact chapelattendance@asbury.edu for additional information.
Students approved through the Office of Academic Accessibility Resources for online chapel will complete FLEX credits by viewing Hughes Chapel services online and completing a paragraph (minimum three sentences) summary of the Chapel. The response should demonstrate that the student listened to the entire Chapel message. Summaries are due per the following schedule:
Students with Chapel attendance accommodations should refer to their Chapel Attendance Accommodations Agreement for additional information.
In order to receive FLEX credit for attending Chapel, students must both scan in via the iAttended app AND sit in their assigned seat. Students who scan in but are not in their assigned seat will have their credit removed. Students will be notified by email when this occurs and have opportunity to appeal the credit removal. Students who have a legitimate issue with their assigned seat should email chapelattendance@asbury.edu and explain the problem.
Respectful, engaged University Chapel participation is expected. Inappropriate behavior (arriving late, leaving early, excessive phone use, laptop usage, studying, talking, food, disrespect) will result in a deduction of 1/2 credit. Students will be notified by email the first three times they are marked for inappropriate behavior. After the third notice, students will receive a deduction for each subsequent violation. Students are responsible to regularly check their iAttended app and monitor their credit totals, which may include deductions.
Students who do not complete the required 32 FLEX credits (or adjusted equivalent) may be subject to Chapel Probation and/or Chapel Suspension. See the Chapel Probation page for additional information. Chapel Suspension means that the student will not be able to enroll in classes for a full semester.
See the detailed response for unfinished credits below. Questions may be directed to chapelattendance@asbury.edu.
Students who complete 28-31 credits have an opportunity to complete their credit requirement through community service prior to the beginning of the next semester. Students will be placed on Chapel Probation at the end of the current semester. However, if the required community service hours are received by the Chapel Attendance Office by the designated deadline, the student will be released from probation. See the Chapel Probation page for additional information.
Students who complete 20-27 credits are on Chapel Probation the following semester. Students may be on Chapel Probation for one semester only. More than one semester of Chapel Probation will most likely result in Chapel Suspension.
Students who complete 19 or fewer FLEX credits are almost certainly placed on Chapel Suspension for the following semester.
In order to graduate and receive their diploma, seniors must have a passing grade in their final semester of Chapel. Graduation candidates who have unfinished credits beyond the number achievable through community service will complete a 500-word reflection essay (on a Chapel not previously attended) for each additional unfinished credit. Students will be notified of their specific requirements, which must be completed by the deadline identified by Registrar’s Office to graduate in the current term.
Chapel Probation precludes student participation in athletic and other intercollegiate competition as well as student leadership (including but not limited to Class Cabinet, ASC/Student Government, or any Student Life student leadership roles). Participation in AU-sponsored public programs (on or off campus) that are not a clear academic course requirement are also not permitted (including but not limited to study abroad, theatre productions, musical performances, student shows and Tumbling Team). Eligibility for certain scholarships also may be affected. Any student who earns a grade of “N” (not passing) for two semesters will most likely be suspended from the University for one semester.
While on Chapel Probation, students must participate in four Chapel Probation meetings across the semester and complete related assignments. Students will be notified of the times and locations of these meetings prior to the beginning of the semester. Any inability to attend meetings must be discussed with the Vice President of Student Life or designee, and an equivalent requirement will be put into place.
In order to pass Chapel Attendance for the probation semester, students must fulfill the Chapel Probation requirements in addition to meeting their current FLEX credit requirement. Students who do not fulfill all requirements may be placed on Chapel Suspension the following semester. If suspension is waived and the student is allowed to return on Chapel Probation, the student must repeat the required Chapel Probation meetings and assignments the next semester.
Students who complete 28-31 of their 32 FLEX credits (or the adjusted equivalent) are placed on Chapel Probation but qualify for restoration through community service. Students are notified by email and written mail within 14 days after the last day of classes regarding their probationary status and opportunity for restoration.
Students who are eligible for Chapel Probation restoration may complete one hour of community service for each FLEX credit needed to complete their requirement. Students are responsible for finding a community service opportunity to complete their community service hours.
Community service must meet the following criteria:
All qualifying community service work completed must be recorded on the Community Service Log and verified by the work supervisor. The student must email a scan or picture of the Community Service Log to ChapelAttendance@asbury.edu by the deadline on the form to have their Chapel Attendance grade changed to “P” (passing) and to be removed from Chapel Probation.
Students may be on Chapel Probation only one semester during their Asbury University enrollment. A second semester of Chapel Probation will most likely move a student to Chapel Suspension. Therefore, it is in the best interest of students who qualify for restoration through community service to take advantage of this opportunity.
Questions or concerns should be directed to ChapelAttendance@asbury.edu.
