Spreading the Gospel Through Music Ministry
Rodney Jean ’21, a graduate with a B.A. in Music, is living out his calling to music ministry as the Assistant Divisional Music Director for The Salvation Army in Florida. Based in Tampa, Jean serves as a music pastor for 38 churches across the state, using his talents to disciple young musicians and grow the Kingdom of God.
“Music has always been a part of my life,” Jean said. “It’s taken me across the U.S. and even to South America. I feel called by God to use my musical skills in ministry.”
Jean finds joy in mentoring young musicians, whether at divisional music camps or during private lessons throughout the year. His passion lies in equipping the next generation of worship leaders and fostering their spiritual growth.
Reflecting on his time at Asbury, Jean shared how the university instilled vital Christian disciplines that shape his work today.
“Praying before music classes and leading daily devotionals are normal for me now, thanks to my time at Asbury,” Jean said. “Those foundational moments have had a lasting impact on my ministry.”
Jean credits many professors in the music department for shaping his journey, offering wisdom and support during his studies. His advice for current students and young alumni emphasizes the value of community: “Don’t take for granted the relationships you build at Asbury,” Jean said. “Be intentional about nurturing those connections, especially your relationship with God.”
When he’s not leading music ministry, Jean enjoys playing and watching basketball, hiking, and exploring new cuisines as a self-proclaimed foodie.
