Students are not required to bring their own computer to campus. The need varies by department and the area of study chosen by the student. Most departments neither require nor expect students to have their own computer. When a computer is required to complete class assignments, the computer labs on campus are readily available with all necessary software, printers, and scanners. For more information about specific requirements for each area of study, contact the chair of the department.

Mac OS X 10.8 and above, and Windows 7 and above.
Though troubleshooting support is not provided for Linux, it is compatible with the campus network. Students who choose to use Linux are responsible for configuring their own systems.
The University provides a network port for each student in residence hall rooms, along with connections in many classrooms and throughout the Kinlaw Library. In addition to network ports being available throughout campus, wireless internet is also available in most classroom spaces, and in all undergraduate on-campus housing. Eight general-purpose computer labs are available to students, though most students elect to have their own computer. If students bring their own computer, tablet, or phone to campus, Information Technology Services will provide them with directions for connecting to the network. Internet access and individual email accounts are provided to all students. Students of Asbury University can receive discounts on new computers from Dell and Apple.
Each campus computer lab is updated, or "refreshed" on a yearly basis with the required software as requested by the Faculty. For information about what software is currently installed in our computer labs, please visit our Instructional Lab Academic Software Page.
Asbury University provides free antivirus software to all currently enrolled students and all current employees. You can find a copy of Microsoft Security Essentials and instructions for installing it on this page. Any student, staff, or faculty member who needs additional help installing this software can contact I.T. Services. Please note, I.T. Services provides free computer assistance for all current students (including Asbury Academy and Online students) to install software, check for and clean computer viruses, and give recommendations for computer improvement.
The Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel) is available to download for free for current Faculty, Staff, and Students at Asbury. Please follow these instructions to download Microsoft Office onto your computer (please note, you may need to sign in with your Asbury credentials to view the instructions).
This install of Office is only valid while you are a current student, faculty, or staff member at Asbury.
At this time, Asbury University does not sell or give discounts on any operating systems, or other software products. However, many companies/products, such as Adobe Creative Cloud, offer student rates for anyone with a valid .edu email address.
Wireless Internet Access is provided in all campus residence halls, and in most classrooms and office buildings. For more information about our wireless network coverage, please contact I.T. Services.

Guests and visitors of Asbury University are welcome to use their own computer on Asbury's Network provided they obtain a guest account. Due to licensing agreements, guests and visitors are not permitted to use the campus computer labs. The Kinlaw Library has a dedicated computer set up for guests and visitors to check email, search the internet, etc. A guest network account can be requested at the circulation desk in the Kinlaw Library.
Guest Accounts are presently available by visiting the Kinlaw Library Circulation Desk.
Students may use any campus printer which is located in one of the eight campus computer labs. Additionally, students may also use the printer located by the steward desk in the Morrison-Kenyon Student Center.
Each student is granted a $40.00 allowance for printing each semester. This allotment isn't something that is charged to the student, but rather, what I.T. Services expects each student to print in a given semester. If a student prints more than their $40 allotment, the cost of the extra print jobs is added to their student account bill. Black and White printing is $.10 per page, Color printing is $.25 per page. Please note, excess print balances do not roll over, rather, every active student's account is refreshed to $40 at the beginning of the semester.
If your account was charged incorrectly, you can get your print balance refunded the difference. Please see the instructions here for print refunds.
The $40.00 allotment given to students each semester is "funny money," and not an actual charge in the tuition paid to Asbury. Thus, you cannot get a refund of that money to your student account if you do not use all of your print balance.
Once a student has been accepted as a student at Asbury, their information is provided by Admissions to Information Technology Services. Twice a day, new student accounts are created based on information provided to I.T. Services by Admissions. Note: students must have provided all the necessary information about themselves to Admissions before their information is passed to I.T. Services.
Once a student has been readmitted to Asbury University, their account should be reactivated automatically. If you find that you are still unable to access your account, you'll need to contact the coordinator for the program you've been admitted to. If you are an undergraduate student, please contact Admissions. If you are unsure of whom to contact, please contact I.T. Services, and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

According to the Information Technology Services Memorandum of Understanding in the Handbook for Community Life, "Excessive use of information technology resources, including but not limited to campus network bandwidth, server capacity, Internet bandwidth and email, is not permitted. If any one computer or person causes a disruption to the network or servers, then Information Technology Services may disable the network connection to that single computer or the person’s network account so the rest of the campus can continue normal data services. Once the problem has been resolved, the computer connection to the network or person’s account can be restored"
If a student, faculty, or staff member receives an email they believe to be fraudulent spam, they can forward it to ServiceDesk@asbury.edu for I.T. Services to block. If you are unsure of the origin of an email, please do not click on links or content.
According to the Information Technology Services Memorandum of Understanding in the Handbook for Community Life, "Every student and employee is provided with one or more server/network accounts. You may not allow others to use your account and password. Those accounts are to be used only by the person they were assigned to and should never be given to or used by anyone else. You are responsible for anything done through the use of your account. Sharing your University-provided account with another person may be grounds for disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal."
Due to security concerns, Asbury Information Technology Services does not allow parents to call on behalf of their children in regards to their student's network account (anyone could claim to be the parent of your son or daughter). The best thing a parent can do is dial I.T. Services at (859) 858-5177, and hand the phone to their student. I.T. Services will be happy to assist them in any way possible.
When a student graduates or takes a leave of absence from the institution, their email account is active for six months after their last date of enrollment (or day of graduation). After that six months, their account is disabled and stored for up to one month before the account is deleted. All graduates are encouraged to begin using their own personal email address when communicating with friends, family, and future employers!
Asbury University encourages all members of the campus community to sign up for Emergency Text Notifications. Students can sign up for Emergency Text Notifications by logging into the Student Portal and clicking "phone information" under "more" then adding their cell phone number and checking "Include my cell phone number for emergency text messaging." Make sure to specify your provider in the drop down menu.
If you are a faculty or staff member, or a student unable to sign up through the Student Portal, you may contact I.T. Services and provide your Name, Phone Number & Cell Phone Provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc.) to sign up.
No, Asbury University does not provide cell phones to students.
Skype and Facetime use depends on the availability of campus bandwidth, and is not guaranteed to always have a strong connection on campus.
New Students receive their Asbury University ID Cards during Welcome Weekend (August and January). Students who have been admitted to Asbury University are asked to wait to have their card made until Welcome Weekend in August and January when they come to campus.
Asbury University ID Cards are used by students for dorm access, meal plans, and special campus funds called Eagle Bucks, which can be used at the Campus Bistro and Hiccup Café (Coffee Shop). Additionally, many local retailers give discounts to Asbury University Students if they show their ID card when purchasing food and other items. Raising Caines, Subway, and the Cinemark movie theater are some examples of local establishments that provide student discounts to Asbury students.
If a student is having difficulty with accessing their assigned dorm with their card, I.T. Services recommends that the student check with their Resident Director to verify that their dorm access is still working. If a student's access permissions are correct, I.T. Services is happy to examine the card for damage and defects. Defective and damaged cards are considered 'end-of-life' and will be replaced by I.T. Services for free. Cards which have been intentionally damaged must be paid for by the student. Contact I.T. Services for more details.
If a student is having difficulty with their meal plan, the Service Desk recommends that the student check with Student Accounts & the Business Office to verify that their meal plan is active. If the student's meal plan is active, I.T. Services is happy to examine the card for damage and defects. Defective and damaged cards are considered 'end-of-life' and will be replaced by I.T. Services for free. Cards which have been intentionally damaged must be paid for by the student. Contact I.T. Services for more details.
Missing or Stolen IDs should be reported to I.T. Services as soon as possible to prevent others from gaining access to student dorms and meal plans. Missing IDs may be replaced at the Service Desk by paying $15.00 to the circulation desk on the 2nd (main) floor of the Kinlaw Library. Stolen ID cards are only replaced for free if a student provides a copy of the campus security report to I.T. Services, or at the discretion of the Service Desk Manager.
Replacement ID Cards are $15 for students. Money is collected at the circulation desk on the 2nd (main) floor of the Kinlaw Library, and students need to bring their receipt from the circulation desk down to I.T. Services, room 131. Students will present their receipt to the I.T. Services staff who will print them a replacement card.
