Dr. Devin Brown Featured at Indiana Book Festival

June 18, 2018

Asbury University English Professor Dr. Devin Brown is known for his expertise in the field both nationally and internationally with a body of work that’s taken him across the states, pond and back. His latest engagement has taken him to the Hoosier state where he was one of eight speakers invited to present at the Indiana Book Festival.

The festival, the first of its kind in the state, was designed to bring authors, readers and creative writers together for a day of sharing and collaboration.

Matt de la Pena, whose book “Last Stop on Market Street” won the 2016 Newbery Award, was among the authors present. Homer Hickman also spoke during the festival. The award-winning film “October Sky” is based on Hickman’s novel “Rocket Boys.”

“I enjoyed talking with the many people who came to my sessions or stopped by my book table,” said Brown. “I was also able to have a really interesting conversation with Matt de la Pena about what it was like to win the Newbery Award. To be able to represent Asbury among such notable writers was a real highlight for me.”

During the festival, Brown gave two presentations and afterwards signed copies of his books.

“Many states have started having a book fair to celebrate reading and storytelling,” Brown commented. “This event was special because it also included sessions for those who are hoping to publish their own book someday. I enjoy talking about books by celebrated authors, but I also like to encourage writers who are just starting out because they will be the ones who will inspire the readers of tomorrow.”

The event was held in Muncie on the grounds of Minnetrista, a forty-acre park with gardens, a museum and the historic home of the Ball family who was known for producing the Ball canning jars that are sold and used all over the world.

Brown, a Lilly Scholar, is the author of more than 10 books. His works include “A Life Observed: A Spiritual Biography of C.S. Lewis,” “Discussing Mere Christianity” and “Bringing Narnia Home: Lessons from the Other Side of the Wardrobe.”

Join us in congratulating Dr. Brown on his latest accomplishments.
