Asbury Equine Program Awarded Grant from USA Equestrian Trust

Asbury University’s Equine Center continues to prove that it’s one of the nation’s finest as it was recently chosen to receive a grant from USA Equestrian Trust. The company awarded roughly $40,000 to four equine-centered non-profits.

“This is our first time at Asbury Equine to receive a grant from USA Equestrian Trust,” Equestrian Director and Professor Harold Rainwater said. “We are very honored to be selected to receive this award.”

Of the nearly $40,000 spread out between the four non-profits, Asbury received $5,000. The money will be used to fund three scholarship awards of $1,500 each for junior and senior students in the University’s police mount program. This one-of-a-kind program trains horses to serve with the police, in the military and with national park rangers.

According to Rainwater, eligible students will be notified of the scholarship opportunity and asked to apply in order to be considered for the award.

Asbury is currently the only American university offering a police horse training program administered by students. The program was formed in 2001 when Asbury students started training Percheron Thoroughbred crossed horses as police mounts through participation with the National Police Horse Colloquium at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The USA Equestrian Trust, a “private foundation dedicated to furthering the rich legacy of horses and equestrian sport,” was originally founded in 1917 as the American Horse Show Association.
