Master of Arts in Teaching Degree – Option 6 Programs at Asbury

At Asbury, your pathway as an educator is designed for you to thrive. Our comprehensive online Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program opens doors for you to advance and become a high-quality asset to your school system.

Master of ARts in tEaching Degree – Option 6 Requirements
You can complete our M.A.T. program through a traditional academic experience or Option 6, otherwise known as the alternative route. With Option 6, once admitted to Asbury, you can study while teaching within the school system (as long as you have a bachelor’s degree in a non-teaching major). You will then be issued a one-year Temporary Provisional (TP) certificate after completing the appropriate application started by your school’s district, with a yearly renewal until you receive your degree. No matter the route you decide to take, the program will take around six to eight semesters to complete.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- For the MAT in ESL, LBD, or ELE a bachelor’s degree in any area will suffice.
- For the MAT in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, Social Studies, French, Latin, Spanish, or Middle School content areas (choose two) including English, Math, Social Studies, or Science, then a bachelor’s degree in the corresponding content area is required.
- Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA in your bachelor’s degree or advanced degree
- Passing score on the appropriate content area PRAXIS exam (if applicable).
- For the MAT in any of the following content areas, you will need to pass the corresponding PRAXIS exam prior to admission:
- Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, Social Studies, French, Latin, Spanish, Middle School content areas (choose two) including English, Math, Social Studies, or Science. (English as a Second Language, Elementary Education, and Learning and Behavior Disorders students are exempt from this prerequisite)
- Passing score on the TOEFL examif your first language is not English
