Pursue Teacher Certification in Secondary Mathematics Education

In addition to the student teaching clinical, bachelor’s in math education students complete Asbury’s Teacher Education Program, an essential piece of becoming certified to teach math in grades 8-12. Through the Teacher Education Program, students ensure they take on all experiential and academic experiences needed to earn teacher certification after graduation.

With the guidance of advisors and faculty, students can begin meeting state teacher certification requirements to teach mathematics in secondary classroom settings. A seamless process, the Teacher Education Program follows a specific course order and includes seminars on topics such as teaching objectives, classroom procedures and legal policies relating to classroom teachers.

Secondary Math Education Degree Requirements

The secondary math education program curriculum includes general education and teacher preparation coursework with a concentration area in math subjects.

Requirements for the B.S. in Mathematics Grades 8-12 (secondary education) include:

  • 74 credit hours in mathematics and education courses
  • 44 credit hours in Foundations general education courses
  • 6 credit hours in free electives to satisfy 124 credit hour degree requirements
  • Student teaching experience

The Asbury School of Education is accredited by agencies including the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) of Kentucky, and Asbury University is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Professional Student Teaching Clinical

After completing initial coursework preparing them for real-world classroom teaching, students in the secondary math education degree program are set on the path of becoming professional educators through an integrated student teaching clinical-based experience. 

The undergraduate student teaching experience merges authentic learning through seminars with full-time assignments to work as a teacher in an accredited school setting, where you will observe as well as participate in teaching and actively improve the impact of student learning in your placement location.
