Asbury English Professor to Speak in Distinguished Lecture Series

Asbury University’s resident C.S. Lewis Scholar and English Professor Dr. Devin Brown will visit Harding University to speak as part of its American Studies Institute (ASI) Distinguished Lecture Series. Brown will present with Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis, on Nov. 5. Brown and Gresham will discuss Lewis’ life and work.
Asbury’s academic excellence and spiritual vitality are widely recognized in the world of academia with University faculty regularly being invited to speak in chapel services, conferences and other events across the country.
Brown enjoys sharing with other colleges and universities, and looks forward to representing Asbury during the ASI Distinguished Lecture Series. Throughout the academic year, the lecture series will host other distinguished guests including former Indianapolis Colts Coach Tony Dungy, founding director of the O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom Michael Cox and former NASA mathematician Christine Darden, whose story was featured in the book and feature film “Hidden Figures.”
“I am very honored to be able to represent Asbury at other schools,” Brown said. “I am a bit overwhelmed because last year’s speaker was Laura Bush. The good news is that I am speaking about Lewis, a topic that lots of people are already interested in. It seems to me that we have speakers from other schools come here every year, so I am always happy when any Asbury faculty gets to return the favor and is asked to speak somewhere else.”
Brown and Gresham will speak during an evening lecture series where they will cover Lewis’ life, major work and impact before holding a book signing for Brown’s Lewis biography. The talk will be open to the general public. The following day, Brown will speak at the university’s chapel service.
Later this year, Brown will visit the University of Mary Washington where he will speak in its Crawley Great Lives Series about J.R.R. Tolkien and hold a book signing for his biography on the legendary writer.
In addition to being an acclaimed Lewis Scholar, Brown is also a Lilly Scholar and has published 11 books, more than 50 articles, poems, scripts and essays on the work of Tolkien and Lewis. His works include “A Life Observed: A Spiritual Biography of C.S. Lewis” and “Tolkien: How an Obscure Oxford Professor Wrote the Hobbit and Became the Most Beloved Author of the Century.”
