Asbury’s Dayton School of Business Hosts First Annual Golf Classic

November 1, 2019

Asbury University’s Dayton School of Business (DSB) provides plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. The most recent example of this came this week when the school hosted the Dayton School of Business 2019 Golf Classic. The event was put on by sport management students from Professor Michelle Smith’s event management course. View a photo gallery below!

Monday’s tournament marked the first-ever annual classic put on by the DSB. In total, 68 players representing 17 teams came out for the event at Connemara Golf Course. Proceeds support Asbury’s Sport Management Scholarship Program.

For the DSB students involved in the planning process, the event served as an excellent learning opportunity.

“It was great to get practical experience planning a major event,” Joe Williams ’20 said. “It also provided an opportunity to practice networking skills with local businesses, which will serve me well in my future career. I am so thankful that I had the chance to participate in this class and for Professor Smith’s guidance through the whole process.”

Kentucky Underground took home the first-place title and finished with a score of 50. Prizes included Callaway golf wedges, a suite at upcoming Lexington Legends games, tickets for local sporting events and more. Students worked with sponsors First Southern National Bank, G & J Pepsi and the Lexington Legends.

“Learning by doing with the seamless integration of faith and work are two tenants of our business program,” Dayton School of Business Dean Michael Kane said of the event. “This tournament is evidence. The sport management students learned how to create and execute a sporting event not through a textbook but by doing it. They performed with a high degree of integrity and the results show. Congrats on a job well done.”
