Award Honorees from Reunion 2022

Alumni Board President Lisa Corbett ’86 Bacon introduced this year’s alumni award winners during Reunion. “Advancing the cause of Christ around the world is exactly what you have done and continue to do — all in very different ways, using the gifts God has given each of you to accomplish His purpose and His plan,” she told the group on Saturday morning. “We are grateful. Since 1946, the Alumni Board has been recognizing outstanding alumni whose impact can be felt around the world.”

Asbury’s highest alumni honor of distinction

Commissioner Dr. Kay Fuller ’57 Rader is retired from The Salvation Army, having served as the World President of Women’s Organizations for The Salvation Army International. Leading through learning, her service and commitment to the Gospel has advanced the cause of Christ around the world — literally. Her advocacy for women in leadership has been wrapped in grace and determination, providing opportunities for women to grow in their faith and development.

“I will make you fishers of men.” This describes the lifelong investment Dr. Jonathan ’67 and Judith Hoover ’67 Culver have made in our brothers and sisters in Indonesia and Malaysia. Heralding the Good News, they have given of their time, talent and gifts to answer God’s call on their lives. Through Jon’s teaching and Judith’s prayer ministry, there are many in Heaven because of their ministry – however, they recognize that their impact on a few rippled out to many. They still continue to serve with One Challenge International and are faithful members of the Church of the Savior.

Approximately 40 million people around the world are trafficked every day. Andy ’96 and Andrea Toledo ’97 Baker stand in the gap for these people in Bolivia. They have established safe places for sexually exploited women and children and provide jobs and training to help instill dignity and hope. Their ministry shares Good News about a God who loves them. Andy takes this work beyond Bolivia with Rescue: Freedom International. For more than 21 years, they have invested in others and have loved people the way our Heavenly Father loves us.

Created in 2000 to acknowledge younger alumni who are emerging as influential leaders

Growing up, Stockton Brown ’12 knew she wanted to help those who were unable to help themselves — she desired to be an advocate. After Asbury, she attended law school and then clerked for a District Judge before pursuing a dream of serving with International Justice Mission. She volunteered with IJM in Ghana as legal counsel in the fight against human trafficking.

Honoring those who selflessly give of their time, talents and resources in support of Asbury

Derek Motsch ’02 is a senior civil engineer at Element Design in Lexington, Ky. He used his expertise to create architectural renderings for a Garden Plaza at the Kirkland Complex, which is the 2022 Reunion Gift Project. The stunning images Derek created brought the concepts for the Garden Plaza to life. His contribution to the vision of a beautiful, multi-use space that builds community through athletics, events, study and reflection has galvanized fundraising for the project. It also illustrates Derek’s commitment to an integration of life and faith and a desire to impact culture for Christ through his profession, his skills and his servant life. Derek and his wife Billie Rice ’02 Motsch live in Lexington with their children.

Chuck Christensen works with Case Contracting Company, a state-of-the-art general contracting firm known for cost control, progress control, quality control and skillful value engineering and purchasing. Chuck’s keen interest in athletics led to his using his expertise in these areas to provide invaluable advice and assistance on Asbury projects such as the Kirkland Complex, the Bowdoin Athletic Practice Facility and the Softball Press Box. He often serves as a liaison, providing direction and connection between the University and the building industry professionals involved with on- campus construction. Kathy Bowdoin ’11 Christensen is a faithful friend to the University who has continued the legacy of Asturians from the Bowdoin family: Herb ’51 and Polly Thompson ’51 Bowdoin, Mike Bowdoin ’86, Jan Bowdoin ’80 Oswald, and her sons, Brooks Toole ’15 and Bryce Toole ’15. Kathy graduated from Asbury with a major in Leadership and Ministry. A steadfast supporter of the University, Kathy offers her time, skills and resources to further its mission. Chuck and Kathy exemplify the very best qualities of our distinctive Asbury community: selfless leadership, faithfulness, generosity and unswerving Kingdom purpose and service.
