Title:                Lead Groundskeeper

Department:   Physical Plant

Reports to:      Director of Campus Facilities

Position Description:  The “lead” designation is an additional employment assignment within the physical plant’s given trades structure.  The role is assigned to employees who have shown potential for leadership within their given trade or discipline and have potential to appropriately direct the daily work of fellow staff.  Maintain all University grounds including main campus, rental property, athletic fields, golf course, subdivisions and farms to University standards in service to students, staff and visitors. 

Under the direction and leadership of the Manager/Supervisor the “Lead” employee will:

  • Assign/structure the daily work of fellow staff and student workers to provide maximum efficiency and effectiveness
  • Communicate with the manager/supervisor all issues related to areas of assignment
  • Assist with work/job inspections in order to insure thorough completion of assigned tasks
  • Performs other duties as assigned

The “Lead” works under the direction of the manager/supervisor who maintains direct supervisory responsibilities for the crew.

An important part of the position is supporting the ministry and mission of the University and advancing the academic excellence and spiritual vitality of our University and students. Each employee plays an important role in the development of the Christian faith in our students.

Essential Functions:

Duties:

  • Mow grass
  • Trim hedges and shrubbery
  • Leaf removal, snow and ice removal
  • Wash university vehicles
  • Campus moves
  • Weed eat
  • Cut wood
  • Repair fences
  • Replace trees
  • Accept other duties as assigned

Critical Physical Demands:

  • Frequently lift 20-45 pound objects
  • Occasionally lift and carry 50-100 pounds
  • Frequently able to climb ladders and clean debris from roofs
  • Occasionally work overhead
  • Occasionally climb stairs
  • Frequently able to sit, walk, stand, bend and squat
  • Frequently able to grasp and perform fine manipulation
  • Constantly able to push and pull
  • Participation in after-hours snow crew is required
  • Majority of work assignment is outdoors 
  • Position is considered essential and must report to work, if possible, when the institution is closed due to extreme weather conditions

Skill requirements:

  • Must be able to read and write
  • Basic math skills needed
  • Must be able to operate a lawn mower and other equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time on-site position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Potential exists to work some evenings and weekends.

Travel:

No travel is expected for this position.

Experience and Training: Two years or more of related experience.  Must show general knowledge of proper pruning and planting techniques with understanding of turf maintenance and basic knowledge of equipment maintenance related to this field.

Education: High School diploma or equivalent highly preferred.

Supervision Received: Direct supervision from Grounds Supervisor, Groundskeeper III and/or Assistant Director of Physical Plant and occasionally the Director of Physical Plant following standardized methods.  Occasional variations in procedure.  May receive direction from other institutional supervisors as needed.

Other Requirements: Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical exam, drug screen and background check.   A committed and dynamic Christian faith is vital along with the ability to support the University’s theological position, lifestyle standards and mission.
