Student Center Steward

Job Details

Department:  Other
Job Type:  Student
Status:  Exempt
Deadline:  Until Filled

The Student Center Steward is to be a clean-cut, welcoming, and friendly representative of Asbury University to Asbury students, staff members, and guests in the Stuce. The Steward should always be prepared to serve visitors in the Student Center, mindful of maintaining its space and assuring that its equipment is consistently presentable and maintained. It is also expected that Stewards take ownership of keeping a watchful eye out for cleanliness, upholding behavioral community standards, and maintaining a hospitable presence in the building. The Conference Services Staff and Student Manager expect that Stewards will be responsible, observant, and diligent in attending to the Student Center space needs while providing top-rate customer service, not only to users of the facility, but also to their fellow Steward employees. Steward wages are $7.25 per hour.

Although specific duties will vary based upon the daily operational needs, aspects of the Steward’s responsibilities include:
• Checking out games, equipment, and other Stuce-owned items while monitoring their condition and making sure that everything checked out is adequately maintained.
• Holding students and other visitors accountable for damaged equipment and collecting fees for broken items.
• Setting up portable sound system.
• Assisting students and staff members in locating reserved spaces.
• Serving as a point-person who is able to provide resourceful information to campus visitors.
• Cleaning of the building: The Steward on-duty is responsible for attending to any visible cleaning need that arises during his/her shift. Note that Stewards are instructed to refrain from handling any mess or spill that involves bodily fluid which may be a health and safety risk. In these situations, they are expected to contact their supervisor immediately.
• Confrontation of behaviors that are dangerous to the person(s) involved and others, as well as behaviors that are inappropriate to Asbury community standards. The most frequent confrontation handled by stewards are misuses of equipment and inappropriate displays of affection.
• Responding to emergencies.
• Performing various administrative tasks which may be assigned by the Conf. Serv. Staff and Student Manager.
• Communicating with the Conf. Serv. Staff and Student Manager when necessary.
• Accountability to the Conf. Serv. Staff and Student Manager regarding any of the aforementioned duties.

Ideal candidates must have initiative in being responsible to carry out every responsibility in this job description. They are dependable team players who are able to communicate key information to other Stewards and assist in covering shifts that may become open at short notice. Each Steward is required to do some weekend hours, whether that is weekly or on alternating weekends. It is not a position that prioritizes study time and conversation with friends over their job responsibilities. Instead, the first priorities are serving students, cleaning/organizing, and being aware of the ongoing needs in the building. The Conference Services Staff and Student Manager will serve as agents of the student body in retaining a staff that upholds these responsibilities and look forward to working with the Steward staff to reaching optimal operation of the Student Center.
