Class identity is an integral part of the Asbury undergraduate experience. At Asbury, your class identity isn’t just something you pick up along the way—it’s part of what makes your college experience unforgettable. Asbury has a special tradition of building a legacy with each new graduating class. This tradition has been around since the 1930s, bringing Asbury students closer together both on campus and after graduation.
As early as 1915, if not before, classes were electing officers and choosing a motto, colors and even a class flower. By the 1930s, classes were picking names for their athletics teams— one name to represent all teams for that class, back in the days when inter-class athletics were the Asbury sports scene! Fast forward to today, and this tradition is still going strong (even though our TeamAU athletics have expanded) and has been deeply ingrained into the Asbury experience.
Two senior students (male and female) are elected by their own class to serve as class sponsors for the entire academic year. The sponsors then recruit faculty or staff advisors for the new freshmen. After this, they choose a name, class colors, and verse that will become a part of that class’s identity for their entire time at Asbury and beyond.
It’s not just any hymn
During your first semester, your class will pick a hymn that becomes special to your group and something you’ll treasure singing together at many gatherings to come. Anytime that hymn plays in Chapel, your class will stand and sing the first verse together. The rest of the student body then joins in, but that first verse is all you. This hymn unites your class. Even at class reunions, which are held at five-year intervals, this tradition continues.
And here’s the cool part—you’ll find out your class name, logo, and verse before you even step foot on campus. So get ready to be part of a tradition that’s as much about legacy as it is about your unique Asbury journey!
