Life in Paris

There is a reason they say “Paris is always a good idea.” The historical stomping grounds for countless artists, writers, and creatives alike, Paris offers an experience unlike any other.

Paris is divided into arrondissements, or neighborhoods, each with their own personality and atmosphere. With campus being located in the 6th arrondissement, students are in the perfect location to explore all that Paris has to offer. Students will be within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and countless Parisian cafes. Living and learning in the center of Paris, students will be surrounded by remnants of an ancient and medieval past; modern revolutionary history; and thriving contemporary culture filled with markets, industry, and global opportunities.

Another opportunity to explore can be found in the Latin Quarter. The Latin Quarter, also known as the student quarter, holds the Sorbonne and is known for its lively student life. This area has been home to a plethora of artists and writers, such as Ernest Hemingway and Voltaire. With this mixture of history and present-day excitement, the Latin Quarter promises not to disappoint.

As a student in the City of Lights, museums are in abundance – and free! Through Asbury University, students have the opportunity to discuss pieces in class and then experience the pieces in person. Not only is the Louvre just a 30 minute walk from campus, but other museums such as Musée d’Orsay – containing pieces from Van Gogh and Renoir, Centre Pompidou – containing pieces from Duchamp and Warhol, and Musée de l’Orangerie – containing Monet’s famous Water Lilies are all only a metro ride away. Even the most casual of art admirers will enjoy this up close and personal experience these museums offer.

Along with museums, Paris is known for its gardens. Filled with a patchwork of blooms and bushes, foliage and fountains, the gardens in Paris are the resting place for those looking to read a good book, picnic with a friend, or simple take some time to breath amongst a buzzing city. Whether you visit the Tuileries by the Louvre or Champ de Mars by the Eiffel Tower, the gardens of Paris have a bench with your name on it.

In a city like Paris, there is always something going on. If you are looking for something to do on the weekends (as a break from studies), Paris will keep your schedule full. In the fall, a little event known as Paris Fashion Week takes place. With fashion shows littered about Paris, Asbury Paris Semester students in the past have had the opportunity to experience Haute Couture and high fashion up close. Other events happening throughout the semester are Nuit Blanche (a one-night-only art festival throughout the city) and a rotation of important exhibits.
