Communications and Biology in the Sierra Nevada

Travel Course Dates: July 5-16, 2025

Led by Dr. Jim Shores and Dr. Marvin Ruffner

COM/BIO 393 John Muir and the Ecology of Yosemite: This experiential learning course will focus on the environmental conservation history of Yosemite National Park, the culture and history of local Native American tribes, and the ecology of the Yosemite and Sierra Nevada Ecosystem. Specifically this course will 1) Examine the writings of John Muir as a form of environmental communication; 2) Learn the history of Muir’s development of the first environmental NGO, the Hetch Hetchy Valley Controversy/Debate and the eventual establishment of the National Park Service; 3) Study the plants, animals, ecology, and geology of the region that made it worth preserving; and 4) Visit and engage with the Miwok and Kutzadika’a tribes as cross cultural experience to learn from them firsthand, exploring their history in the region and experience some of their food, art, history, approach to the outdoors, and governance.

Academic Credit

  • 3.0 Credit Hours: COM/BIO 393 John Muir and the Ecology of Yosemite
  • Eligible for Cross-Cultural Engagement Requirement (CCE 150EX)

Trip Dates:  July 5-16, 2025

To apply for the Communications and Biology in the Sierra Nevada Travel Course, please follow the following application process:

  1. Fill out the Apply to an Off-Campus Program Form. Upon completion, you will be contacted by the Study Abroad Office.
  2. Fill out the Reference Form and select two persons to serve as references on your behalf. One should be an academic reference and the other should be someone who can speak to your character. An online reference form will be sent to each person. Please have them complete and submit the forms.
  3. The Online Application Form and the Reference Forms are due by November 1, 2024.
  4. FACULTY MEMBER will contact students selected to participate by November 15, 2024.
  5. The first deposit ($564.73) is due December 1, 2024 to secure your spot on this travel course.
