Romans 12:3-8

The other morning I spent time alone with God reading in Romans, simply picking up where I left off. The passage was Romans 12:3-8 where Paul teaches about serving God with our spiritual gifts. Having recently married my beautiful wife Belle last February and also with becoming a new dad on the horizon, I came into this time with a lot on my mind, to say the least.
In this passage, Paul is teaching about how when we use our giftings it honors God. One of the gifts Paul mentions here stood out to me more than the others. That is the gift of leadership. With all the more practical stresses that come with being a new dad – like finances and safety – there’s also the concern of leading my kids and my family well.
Luckily, Paul kicks off this message with the following statement which encouraged me in my stress of becoming a dad. “For by the grace given to me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought…” Thanks, Paul!
After reading these verses, I sat for a bit and then prayed a simple prayer.
Father, help me step into my giftings more fully and honor you with them. Specifically, I ask you to lead me to better lead my family. Help me to serve them with the gifts you’ve given me. I also pray that you help me to not think of myself more highly than I ought. Amen.
I invite you today to ask God what gifts you hold right now, and what gifts He is maybe calling you to step into more in this season. Whether it’s prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, forgiving, or something else, do it unto Him and He will be honored by it.
