A Call to Pray
THIS HAS BEEN A YEAR FILLED WITH “MORE”…
- More than we could have expected or imagined as our students stayed after Chapel, praying for the Lord to break through – and break through He did, His light shining in the darkness.
- This light was contagious and more people than we have ever seen (within 16 days) flooded Wilmore, desperate for more than this world offers.
- More people experiencing freedom as chains were broken and captives were set free.
- More guests on campus this summer with our camps, Reunion and conferences.
- More freshmen than we have had in 25 years. Praise the Lord! y More of His goodness and mercy poured out on us as we
- lean into this new semester.
More. More given and more received.
WE ARE ASKING YOU TO PRAY WITH US…
- For John 17 unity as we seek after our Father.
- To be marked by what we experienced. We are different. Changed. Come, Holy Spirit, pour out Your spirit on us.
- For our students. They carry heavy burdens. They wrestle with or are surrounded by family members who battle depression, anxiety, addiction and suicidal ideation. Pray for victorious power for this generation of young people that they may be set free.
- For our faculty, staff and administrators as they lead and serve.
- For our alumni and friends. May they know they are deeply loved and may we live out our faith in Jesus. May our actions speak louder than our words
- For us to be one with God. He is with us, and He is in us.
All glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

My Case for a Christian Liberal Arts Education
EMILY HURT ’24 | MEDIA COMMUNICATION MAJOR
My senior year looks very different than I would have predicted four years ago. As a freshman, I pictured myself becoming a sought- after filmmaker and moving to Los Angeles or Atlanta immediately after graduation.
Fast forward to today, and I have a Spanish minor despite having no knowledge prior to college. I’ve gained professional sports broadcasting experience at the Olympics, played violin and cello in several music and worship ensembles, dipped my toes in marketing, graphic design, and journalism, sung a solo and danced in a musical theater workshop.
The addition of all of these areas to my educational experience has not diminished my capacity to pursue my major, but rather, it has enhanced the work I do in media communications and elsewhere. The lines separating my major from my foundation classes, extra-curricular clubs, and Chapel have begun to blur, the categories bleeding into one another. The things I have learned from these other disciplines help me to tell better stories through film and give me richer opportunities in my career.
My final two choices for universities were Asbury and a well-known art school; if I had gone to the art school, I would have gained only a fraction of what I have gained from the liberal arts education that Asbury offers. I now have a stake in all the disciplines of thought and have established myself as a lifelong learner. To borrow from the oft-quoted words of the poet Walt Whitman: “I am large, I contain multitudes.”
My most recent skill acquisition is that of podcast producing. I have had the privilege to help facilitate Asbury’s newly revamped podcast, “This is Asbury.” I have had an invigorating front-row seat to conversations with extremely learned minds in every corner of academia. The most encouraging part of these conversations is hearing each of these professors and guests give an account for the evidence of God in their area of expertise. God is present in psychology, film, business, history, music, and equine sciences thus, Christians should be present in those places as well.
In what other setting can you wonder at the mysteries of the Divine with a biologist, an accountant, a teacher, a poet and a physical therapist? Only in a Christian liberal arts institution. I recognize the value of this unique environment and will cherish the remaining time I have to be a member of it. My time at Asbury has expanded my being and capacity for thought in ways I would not have achieved elsewhere. God doesn’t waste any bit of experience, and I am eager to see how He plans to use everything I have learned here in the film industry and beyond.

A Mission Unwavering
Asbury practices prayerful allocation of resources
LARRY D. BROWN ’80, CHAIR, ASBURY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
This edition of The Ambassador recognizes individuals, foundations and businesses who have made financial contributions to Asbury University in the last fiscal year. As chair of the Board of Trustees, let me say, Thank You! You have participated in resourcing the mission of Asbury University, therefore playing an important role in preparing students to engage their culture for Christ through academic excellence and spiritual vitality.
Asbury’s governing documents assign to the Board of Trustees the responsibilities of governance, policy making and resourcing the University to meet the purpose which the Lord gave to John Wesley Hughes in 1890. To meet this mandate the Trustees, individually and collectively, have a fiduciary responsibility to all of Asbury’s constituencies — students, employees, alumni and donors.
As fiduciaries in this context, the Trustees are responsible for holding true to the purpose of Asbury, which requires alignment with the authority of Scripture, Wesleyan theology and education of the whole person. As for students, it means providing an environment and experience to promote intellectual, spiritual, physical and relational development. It requires support for faculty, staff and administration, who by their professional expertise and Christ following lifestyle, help develop students preparing them to be leaders and live a testimony for Christ. For alumni, we continue to celebrate the history and traditions of Asbury as well as the accomplishments of those who are Asburians for life.
To our donors, the Board’s commitment is Biblical stewardship of your sacrificial gifts to scholarships, endowments, programs and capital projects. Through your generosity, the cost of an Asbury education is moderate in relative terms; facilities have been built and/or renovated to provide for a 21st-century educational experience for students and work environment for faculty and staff; and the University has a strong balance sheet with relatively little debt. I trust you will continue your support of the University. There is more to be done to adjust to the educational modalities required in today’s environment, provide for appropriate compensation of faculty and staff, meet student and parent expectations for residential living accommodations and offset the higher costs due to inflation.
On a personal note, my wife, Lisa, and I have supported Asbury University with time and donations for many years. We do so because we are confident in the stewardship of our offerings and trusting that multiple young people will be developed as whole persons and carry the light of Christ into their and future generations. We are glad you have joined us in this effort and trust that you will do so in the future.
Again, on behalf of the Asbury University Board of Trustees – Thank you!

Reunion Gift Project Will Enhance Residence Halls
The 2023 Reunion Gift Project is in progress to elevate the community spaces and entrance experience for Asbury’s Trustees and Glide-Crawford residence halls.
