Parent Handbook: Academic Facts

Founded in 1890, Asbury University is in its second century of providing students with a rigorous Christ-centered education. The fully accredited University annually enrolls a diverse student body of approximately 1,600 scholars and awards bachelor’s degrees in 55 major fields, associate degrees in liberal arts, and a variety of master’s degrees in education and social work.

Seventy percent of the full-time faculty members hold an earned terminal degree in their field, and the average class size is 18. U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings place Asbury University fourth out of 104 comprehensive colleges in the South in the 2006 edition of America’s Best Colleges. In addition, Asbury University and the University’s leadership program were listed in The Templeton Guide: Colleges that Encourage Character Development.

The University’s undergraduate students come from more than 47 states and 11 nations. Because the University is primarily a residential campus, this diversity offers unique opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, and students often take their learning off campus – seven out of 10 participate in some form of community service.

Many study-abroad programs and short-term missions trips can take students around the world. Asbury University is represented by more than 20,000 living alumni in all 50 of the United States and at least 70 countries. Today, Asbury University remains deeply committed to its original mission of training young people for their life work from an evangelical Christian perspective in the Wesleyan-Arminian Holiness tradition.
