Asbury has many opportunities available to students on campus, inside and outside the classroom. However, the options do not stop there. Asbury also provides students with opportunities all over the world in every aspect of media. At Asbury University, we believe students need to be able to communicate ideas proficiently, and that requires a competency in the latest technology available. Asbury has more equipment (cameras and edit suites) per media student than any other school known. We have primarily chosen to use the industry standards in equipment. We do, however, give students a chance to work with some experimental systems that could become the standard of the future.
Audio students use a professional equipped recording studio and our radio students use a radio control room that includes space for two guests and video cameras that allow radio shows to be streamed online or on our local cable system.
Film and television students use the latest equipment such as Canon C100, C300, C500, and C700 cameras, portable lighting systems, well equipped television studio, dollies, jibs and Steadicams.
Students edit the video and film projects on non‐linear editing systems. Our building includes over 60 computers equipped with Premiere Pro and the entire Adobe creative package of software.
The college designed and built a television production trailer. While it is primarily designed to be a training unit, it is also rented by the professional media on an ongoing basis. The unit also functions as the control center for our media production building’s television studio. This is a 40 ft. network quality trailer that includes use of:
The John DeCuir Production Design Studies Center at Asbury University is a resource for students and researchers interested in production design. Dedicated to preserving and promoting the art of production design and sharing Asbury’s significant contributions to the film industry, the center houses a collection of production designs and artwork from some of history’s most influential production designers. The center also offers a variety of programs and events, such as lectures, workshops, exhibitions, online courses, and opportunities to learn production design from the best experts in the field.
Asbury University gives Journalism students many opportunities to hone their skills and become skilled at their chosen area of emphasis. We bring real life experience to the classroom and challenge our students to stretch themselves while working on print, online and broadcast assignments. Besides covering campus events, students also have the opportunity to be reporters and interviewers on television shows. Students even cover the Olympics. Journalism students travelled to the London, Sochi and Rio for the Olympics, covering stories for our local NBC affiliate, WLEX-TV. The students interviewed Olympic athletes and covered stories around the Games. Many unique opportunities are available at Asbury for journalism students working in print and video.
The Asbury University student newspaper, The Collegian, is an independent student publication produced through the Student Life Office.
“Asbury University’s commitment to encourage responsible exercise of academic skills and sound Christian judgment is expressed in the motto: Eruditio et Religio. The University endeavors to establish this commitment in all areas of university life. The general character of the student publications media must adhere to and reflect the spirit of this statement.”
Following the spirit of this statement found in the Student Publications Constitution, the Student Publications Committee – composed of both faculty and students – presents this site to both fulfill this mission, and empower students to embody it.
The Collegian is also online. Students write, layout, and shoot video stories about news, sports and other events and people on campus. Students also produce videos for the website.
Journalism majors who are interested in pursuing a career in writing, reporting or producing broadcast news have that opportunity in the Communication Arts Center news bureau. Students can report news for online live television coverage. There are also a number of shows created by students interested in broadcast journalism including a local news show.
