Program Overview
If you’re searching for a degree that will allow you to grow from the basics of scientific study to producing original and independent research, Asbury’s chemistry – applied research major is for you!
Through the research track addition to the normal chemistry major coursework, your skills in the laboratory will be refined, and you will have the ability to design, conduct, present and even publish research that interests you! With more than 11 laboratory facilities in the state-of-the-art Walt and Rowena Shaw Collaborative Learning Center, you can pursue your interests in everything from eDNA research to lipid bilayers.
Many college chemistry programs focus on the mind, forgetting the body and soul. That results in an incomplete view of this complex discipline. The skills that come from studying chemistry in a Christian liberal arts setting set students apart beyond their skills. In addition to this whole-person focus, you are given access to the equipment, mentorship, and instruction necessary to grow research skills and prepare well for careers and graduate-level chemistry programs.
The chemistry – applied research track includes an additional 17 credits of upper-level laboratory coursework, sharpening your research and analytical skills. This will set you up for success in a wide variety of careers in the research and development industry, as well as enable you to conduct original research alongside world-class faculty mentors.
All students in the applied research track will design, execute and present on a research project! This hands-on application of chemistry, biology and physics classes combined with the project management experience of leading an individual project prepares you to continue your journey into graduate programs and laboratory careers, confident in the knowledge and skills acquired at Asbury!
The 11 new laboratory spaces in the Walt and Rowena Shaw Collaborative Learning Center allow you to explore specialties like eDNA research, cell and molecular biochemistry, ecology and environmental science and more— all with the expert mentorship of faculty.
