The Bachelor of Science in English Grades 8-12 requires a total of 124 course credits to graduate. In addition to learning core major topics and essential teaching skills, students in the English Grades 8-12 major program complete clinical experiences that expand their hands-on background in classroom learning and pedagogy.

Along the way, the Teacher Education Program at Asbury ensures you don’t miss anything that you need to apply to further graduate education programs or enter the workforce after graduation.

Life-Changing Experiences

The Asbury University English and Education departments work cooperatively to ensure that you are proficient in both your subject matter and teaching skills. In addition to the required English classes in literature and writing, you’ll take classes in learning theories, classroom management, methods and materials, writing for teachers and adolescent literature, among others. The capstone of your education will come at the end of your training when you student teach for one semester at a local school.

The Asbury Review, Asbury University’s biannual literary magazine, publishes poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, screenplays, and visual art from Asbury University undergraduate students and emerging writers. In addition, every aspect of the publishing process — from soliciting and selecting submissions to graphic design layout — is managed by Asbury undergraduates under the direction of their faculty advisor.
